HD Heavy Industries (HD) is set to revolutionize its shipbuilding operations by implementing Starlink, a low-orbit satellite communication service, to create a cutting-edge smart work environment.
On Thursday, HD signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with telecommunications giants KT Corporation and KT SAT. The partnership aims to leverage Starlink technology and drive innovation through artificial intelligence (AI).
Starlink is a groundbreaking low-earth orbit satellite communication service. It utilizes a constellation of thousands of small satellites to provide global internet access, even in remote maritime and mountainous regions where traditional infrastructure is impractical.
Under this agreement, HD will integrate Starlink satellite services across its entire shipbuilding process. KT SAT will supply essential equipment, including Starlink antennas, while KT Corporation will enhance employee productivity by incorporating its artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
HD’s primary focus is to establish a robust communication network within ships under construction using Starlink, fostering a smart work environment. The company also emphasizes worker safety, aiming to protect its workforce from potential hazards and unexpected situations during operations.
The shipbuilder plans to significantly expand its remote trial capabilities. Currently, when a ship undergoing sea trials encounters issues in areas with poor maritime communication, it must relocate to waters with better connectivity to address problems and resume testing. The implementation of Starlink’s satellite network is expected to eliminate these hurdles.
This technology enables real-time monitoring of engine status and other critical data from operational vessels, regardless of their location or time zone. Such capabilities allow for immediate action, potentially reducing trial periods and ensuring the timely delivery of ships to customers.
Lee Tae-jin, Executive Director of HD Korean Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, expressed optimism about the new partnership. Lee stated that the integration of Starlink satellite services is expected to significantly boost both workplace safety and delivery reliability. He further noted that moving forward, they’re committed to maintaining its position at the forefront of the global shipbuilding industry through its unparalleled technological process.
