On Wednesday, Elcogen, a fuel cell company backed by HD Hyundai’s climate response strategy, unveiled a new manufacturing facility in Liivamäe, Harju County, Estonia.

The state-of-the-art plant is set to produce solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and electrolysis (SOEC) cells and stacks.

With an annual production capacity of 360 MW, the facility represents a remarkable 36-fold increase from its previous 10 MW output. Elcogen aims to initiate phased commercialization by year-end.

Elcogen has been in the global spotlight following HD Hyundai’s strategic investment. In a landmark 2023 deal spearheaded by HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Chung Kisun, the company injected 45 million EUR (approximately 53.35 million USD) into Elcogen.

The high-profile signing ceremony at Seoul Square was attended by Estonian President Alar Karis and Elcogen founder Enn Õunpuu. Since then, both entities have intensified their collaboration in zero-emission power and green hydrogen technologies, including the establishment of a joint venture in South Korea.
