On Friday, it was confirmed that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix participated as strategic investors in a new funding round for the U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic.

As competition intensifies in the AI semiconductor market, both companies are strengthening their partnerships with global generative AI firms to accelerate their push into the next-generation AI infrastructure market.

On Thursday, Anthropic announced on its official website that it had completed a Series H funding round amounting to 65 billion USD. This investment round included several global strategic and financial investors, with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix among them. The specific amounts invested by individual companies have not been disclosed.

Anthropic, the developer of the generative AI model Claude, is widely regarded as a major competitor to OpenAI. Global tech giants, including Amazon and Google, are also among the major investors in the company.

The recent investments by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are seen as part of their broader strategy to expand their presence in the AI semiconductor ecosystem. Recently, both companies have been ramping up their collaborations with global AI firms in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and AI server memory markets.

Some industry experts suggest that Samsung Electronics’ participation in this investment could potentially lead to foundry cooperation opportunities as Anthropic expands its AI infrastructure in the future. With global AI companies increasingly developing their own AI chips, there’s speculation that Samsung Electronics could secure contracts to manufacture these chips through its foundry services. For Samsung Electronics, this investment could serve as a strategic move to expand its orders for advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes.
