Etc'Despicable Me 4' Director Reveals Why BTS-Blackpink Song Was Included in the Soundtrack
Illumination & Universal Pictures

The director of Despicable Me 4, Chris Renaud, has personally explained why he chose to include songs from K-POP artists BTS and BLACKPINK in the film.

On the 16th, Universal Pictures unveiled the OST lineup for Despicable Me 4, featuring international artists. Notably, it includes “Dynamite” by BTS and “Boombayah” by BLACKPINK, highlighting the global popularity of K-POP. Renaud highlighted, “While many artists enjoy global fandoms, K-pop possesses a unique charm that resonates worldwide.” He elaborated, “The music’s lively energy perfectly aligns with Despicable Me series’ goal of providing audiences with a great time,” explaining his musical selections.

BTS’s “Dynamite” is featured in a scene where Gru and his family disguise themselves and adjust to their new lives. They seek refuge in a safe house to evade the escaped villain, Maxime. The song plays in the hair salon where Gru’s wife Lucy, now known as Blanche, works. Renaud explained, “You can always catch the latest music in hair salons or public places, and we chose BTS’s music to infuse a modern feel and positive energy.”

BLACKPINK’s “Boombayah” is featured in the party bus sequence as the Minions head to the Anti-Villain League, AVL. This scene captures the Minions’ uncontrollable vitality, further enhanced by BLACKPINK’s rhythmic music. Renaud shared, “I listened to many songs to find the perfect one for this scene.” “‘Boombayah’ was a perfect fit for the energy, action, and fun atmosphere that the movie and the Minions provide,” expressing his satisfaction with the song choice after careful consideration.

Despicable Me 4 depicts the story of the Gru’s Family, who have turned away from villainy and now operate as the Agent Minions and Gru Junior within the Anti-Villain League (AVL), their abilities heightened. They embark on a mission driven by revenge against Gru, aiming to prevent the escaped villain Maxime from wreaking havoc. The film will be released in theaters on the 24th in South Korea.
