France Tops FIFA Rankings After Defeating Morocco: What This Means for Future Matches

0

France has surged to the top of the real-time International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) rankings after defeating Morocco to reach the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

In a thrilling quarterfinal clash at Boston Stadium on Friday, France outclassed Morocco with a convincing 2-0 victory, securing their spot in the final four.

This remarkable achievement marks France’s third consecutive World Cup semifinal appearance, following their triumph in Russia 2018 and runner-up finish in Qatar 2022.

The win boosted France’s FIFA ranking points by 23.11, propelling them to a total of 1948.97 points. This impressive tally catapulted them from third to first place, leapfrogging Argentina (1925.15 points) and Spain (1912.34 points).

However, with Argentina and Spain still in contention in their respective quarterfinal matches, the rankings remain fluid and subject to change.

Since April, FIFA has implemented a new system of real-time ranking updates, replacing the previous month-end calculations.

Norway’s Cinderella run to the quarterfinals has seen them rocket up 12 places to 19th, while Mexico’s Round of 16 appearance has propelled them into the top 10, climbing four spots to 10th.

South Korea, whose journey ended in the group stage, has slipped seven places to 32nd in the current FIFA rankings.
