EtcSon Heung-min Returns to LA FC: What’s Next After World Cup Disappointment?

Son Heung-min (LA FC), who left fans wanting more with his individual and team performances at the 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) North and Central America World Cup, has rejoined his club after a period of rest and recovery.

On Wednesday, LA FC took to social media to announce Son’s return, sharing footage of him participating in team training.

The video shows a beaming Son, clad in a sleeveless training kit, working out alongside his teammates.

Son is focusing on regaining peak fitness as he prepares for LA FC’s upcoming away fixture against LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer (MLS) on July 18. The league, which paused in May for the World Cup, is set to resume this week.

After his fourth consecutive World Cup appearance, Son returned to his homeland for some much-needed rest, recharging both physically and mentally.

Despite his high hopes for what could have been his final World Cup – having transferred to MLS prior to the tournament – Son’s performance left him disappointed.

He featured in all three group stage matches, starting two, but failed to register a single goal or assist. The South Korean national team’s campaign was equally disappointing, finishing third in their group after an opening win against the Czech Republic was followed by losses to Mexico and South Africa, eliminating them from the tournament.

Following Korea’s early exit, Son spent time with family before returning to Los Angeles to gear up for the second half of the MLS season.

Son’s first half of the MLS season saw him appear in 13 matches without finding the back of the net. However, he currently leads the league with nine assists.

After his upcoming club commitments, Son is set to join the MLS All-Stars on July 29 for a showdown with the Liga MX All-Stars. Voted in by fans, he’ll line up alongside stars like Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) and Thomas Müller (Vancouver Whitecaps).
