Ship activity at Wonsan Port on North Korea’s east coast has increased significantly in recent weeks, according to a report by U.S.-based Radio Free Asia (RFA) on Friday. The surge in maritime traffic appears to be part of preparations for the June opening of the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone.
Satellite image analysis company SI Analytics reported on Wednesday that an artificial intelligence-based analysis of recent satellite imagery showed Wonsan as the busiest of North Korea’s east coast ports, with the most cargo and oil tankers observed.
Since last October, between 16 and 24 vessels and 4 to 8 oil tankers have been detected operating at Wonsan Port. In comparison, other major ports showed less activity: Rajin had 6 to 10 cargo ships and 1 to 2 oil tankers; Chongjin had 10 to 14 cargo ships and 1 oil tanker; and Hamhung had 2 to 4 cargo ships and 1 oil tanker.
Two large private yachts believed to belong to Kim Jong Un were also spotted at the dedicated pier at Wonsan Port.
SI Analytics noted that this is the first time Kim’s private yachts have been observed at the site since last October. The firm suggested that Kim might prepare to visit the soon-to-open Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone.
In addition, several fuel tank railcars have recently been observed at a previously inactive fuel storage facility in Wonsan. The appearance of covered and uncovered container railcars has raised the possibility that North Korea may be stockpiling refined oil or maintaining aging fuel storage infrastructure.
Last December, Kim visited the Wonsan-Kalma Tourist Zone and was instructed that the site would officially open in June 2025.
Recently, satellite imagery has also captured signs of infrastructure upgrades, including expanded rail and road links between the Kalma district and the Wonsan-Kalma airfield. This suggests that preparations to receive tourists are being accelerated.
