A wildfire that originated in North Korea has spread to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Goseong, Gangwon Province, prompting authorities to continue firefighting efforts for a second day.

According to the Korea Forest Service and other sources, the fire broke out inside the DMZ in Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, at approximately 5:04 PM (KST) on Thursday.

Authorities initially deployed one helicopter from the Korea Forest Service and another from the local government to combat the blaze. However, they were forced to withdraw at nightfall.

On Friday morning, the second day of the fire, forest authorities recommenced operations by dispatching two helicopters at around 6 AM (KST) to continue extinguishing efforts.

While the flames on the South Korean side have been successfully contained, the fire continues to burn in areas adjacent to the Military Demarcation Line and on the North Korean side.

Officials plan to investigate the precise cause of the fire once the blaze is fully extinguished.
