OpenAI explained that the new feature allows for significantly smoother and more personalized conversations between ChatGPT and users by building on previously known information.

Before, users had to input requests for ChatGPT to remember specific information manually. The new feature expands on this capability, allowing ChatGPT to retain conversational context automatically, eliminating the need for repetitive questioning.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared his excitement on X. He stated that there are a few days each year when he wakes up in the middle of the night buzzing with excitement, and today was one of those days. He explained that they have significantly enhanced ChatGPT’s memory, enabling it to reference all past conversations.

Altman continued, expressing his admiration for the new feature, stating that he finds it incredibly impressive and indicative of their exciting direction. He explained that over time, this feature will allow the AI to get to know the user better, evolving into a highly useful and personalized system.

The company has also taken steps to address potential concerns regarding user data collection.

OpenAI stated that users can deactivate this feature, manage specific stored memories directly through ChatGPT’s settings, and control their data privacy.

Additionally, users can inquire about ChatGPT’s memory capabilities and switch to a temporary conversation mode where dialogue is not saved.

The memory feature will initially be available to ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers. Following regulatory reviews, it will be rolled out in the UK, EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. OpenAI has yet to announce a release schedule for its free users.
