Google Messages is rolling out a trial of its Sensitive Content Warning feature, which automatically detects and blurs messages containing explicit images. PhoneArena reported that Google has unveiled a beta version of this new privacy feature for its messaging app.
When the system identifies sensitive content in a photo, it automatically blurs the image. Users can then choose to view the image or block the sender. The ability to reapply the blur after previewing provides an extra layer of privacy when sharing one’s phone with others.
The feature also works in reverse: if a user attempts to send or forward a sensitive image, a warning message appears, requiring confirmation before sending. This safeguard is expected to help prevent accidental sharing of inappropriate content.
While the Sensitive Content Warning feature is turned off by default for most users, it’s automatically enforced for teenager accounts. Parents can manage these settings through the Family Link app, and teens aged 13 to 17 with unsupervised accounts can adjust the settings themselves.
Most image analysis occurs locally on the device through Android’s SafetyCore system. No data is transmitted to Google’s servers, and the feature doesn’t apply to videos. It works only with compatible apps like Messages, balancing user privacy and mistake prevention.
