These AI assistants can simplify complex medical jargon and offer easy-to-understand explanations of test results. This transition marks a move from simply ‘searching’ for health information to engaging in ‘conversations’ about it.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health literacy as the capacity to access, comprehend, assess, and apply health-related information and services. Now, this concept has expanded to include digital health literacy. It’s no longer enough to just search for information online; individuals must be able to judge its reliability and relevance to their specific health concerns.

AI chatbots have emerged as valuable tools in this new landscape. They allow users to seek clarification on medical advice they didn’t fully grasp during doctor visits. Patients with chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension can repeatedly check dietary and exercise guidelines. These AI assistants can help organize questions for upcoming medical appointments or distill key points from extensive health education materials. For older adults who may struggle with medical terminology and digital platforms, well-implemented AI can serve as a personal health translator, converting complex information into everyday language.

However, the most perilous moment arises when individuals blindly accept AI’s responses as gospel truth.
The danger lies in unquestioningly trusting chatbot answers. Confusion can arise when a doctor’s advice conflicts with an AI’s suggestion. While doctors can make mistakes, chatbots may offer seemingly authoritative responses without considering a patient’s full medical history, current medications, or recent test results.

Relying solely on a chatbot’s assurance could lead to dangerous decisions, such as postponing necessary emergency care, arbitrarily stopping prescribed medications, or starting unproven health supplements. People tend to gravitate towards advice that aligns with their preferences, which could lead them to choose a chatbot’s response over a doctor’s guidance simply because it’s more appealing. This can be a recipe for disaster.

The WHO consistently emphasizes that while generative AI holds immense potential for improving access to health information and education, it requires robust safety measures, transparency, and human oversight. This is due to concerns about inaccurate information, biased data, privacy issues, and unclear lines of accountability. Recently, experts have identified a lack of AI literacy itself as a significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of AI in healthcare.

The digital divide presents another challenge. As AI technology advances, its benefits are not equally distributed. Those who know how to formulate effective questions and verify answers can leverage chatbots successfully. However, individuals unfamiliar with digital devices or lacking basic health knowledge may struggle to identify incorrect or misleading information. For those with low health literacy, AI could potentially widen existing health disparities rather than narrow them.

To navigate this new landscape, it’s crucial to shift our approach when using AI for health information.
Instead of asking AI for definitive diagnoses like “What disease do I have?”, it’s safer to inquire about next steps or seek clarification. For example, ask “What are the red flags for these symptoms?”, “What key information should I share with my doctor?”, “Can you explain these test results in layman’s terms?”, or “What are the limitations and sources for this information?” Remember, final decisions about stopping medications or choosing treatments should always involve consultation with healthcare professionals.

Government agencies and healthcare institutions must recognize that simply providing AI services doesn’t complete the digital health transformation. It’s essential to educate all citizens, including older adults, on how to effectively use these tools. This education should cover formulating good questions, verifying information sources, recognizing potentially unreliable answers, and understanding the appropriate limits of sharing personal health data.

It’s crucial to understand that AI chatbots are not digital replacements for doctors. When used properly, they can enhance health literacy by helping individuals better understand medical information and communicate more effectively with their healthcare providers. As we move forward, we need more than just AI users. We need individuals capable of understanding, questioning, and verifying AI-generated responses before applying them to their lives. In the AI era, health literacy isn’t about knowing everything; it’s about discerning what to believe, when to be skeptical, and when human expertise is necessary.
