Samjin Pharmaceutical announced on June 1 that it recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with biotechnology company Aribio Lab to establish a strategic partnership for the joint development and commercialization of vaccines.
Under the agreement, Samjin Pharm will combine its research and development capabilities with Aribio Lab’s immune-enhancing platform technologies to jointly develop vaccines. Upon commercialization, Samjin Pharm plans to leverage its established domestic healthcare provider network and prescription drug marketing expertise to support market adoption.
The companies will collaborate across three key areas. First, they will explore opportunities to utilize Samjin Pharm’s sales infrastructure to support domestic distribution of Aribio Lab’s vaccine candidates, including a herpes zoster vaccine and hepatitis B vaccines for both therapeutic and preventive use.
The partnership will also include joint research and development efforts aimed at enhancing the efficacy and competitiveness of various vaccine pipelines under development using Aribio Lab’s proprietary immune-enhancing platforms, L-pampo and Lipo-pam. Both technologies are based on Toll-like receptor (TLR) activation mechanisms.
In addition, the two companies plan to expand their strategic cooperation to identify new opportunities in South Korea’s vaccine market and pursue future co-commercialization initiatives.
“This collaboration marks a meaningful starting point that combines Aribio Lab’s immune-enhancing platform technologies with Samjin Pharm’s commercialization capabilities,” said Jung Jae-jun. “Through development of our recombinant herpes zoster vaccine candidate CVI-VZV-001, which is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials, as well as hepatitis B vaccines and next-generation adjuvant technologies, we will work to strengthen South Korea’s vaccine competitiveness and contribute to vaccine sovereignty.”
Kim Sang-jin said the alliance would serve as a strategic foundation for generating tangible synergies in the vaccine sector by combining the R&D capabilities of both companies with Samjin Pharm’s sales and marketing expertise.
“This partnership will provide a platform for creating meaningful synergies in the vaccine field,” Kim said. “We will continue to pursue research and development and successful commercialization efforts to deliver measurable contributions to public health.”
Meanwhile, parent company Aribio recently signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Fosun Pharma covering the global development, regulatory approval, manufacturing, and commercialization of AR1001.
The agreement carries a potential value of up to $4.7 billion. Aribio will receive an upfront option payment of $60 million, followed by an additional $80 million upon the announcement of Phase 3 topline results. The company is also eligible for regulatory and commercial milestone payments, as well as royalties of up to 20%.
Aribio said the agreement effectively establishes a global commercialization framework for AR1001 ahead of the completion of its Phase 3 clinical trial program. Under the arrangement, Aribio will continue to lead Phase 3 development and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval process, while Fosun Pharma will provide financial resources and support manufacturing, supply chain operations, regulatory activities, and commercialization efforts.
