Medipost announced on Friday that its brand, Celltrion, has surpassed 340,000 stored umbilical cord blood samples, solidifying its position as the nation’s leading cord blood bank.

This milestone reflects the growing trend of families choosing to preserve umbilical cord blood, a one-time harvestable resource, as a personalized medical asset for future healthcare needs.

Umbilical cord blood, collected from the placenta and umbilical cord after birth, is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells. These cells are vital for transplants treating blood disorders such as leukemia and lymphoma.

Celltrion’s achievement of storing over 340,000 samples, a first in the Korean cord blood banking industry, underscores the enduring trust consumers place in the company. This milestone reaffirms Celltrion’s market leadership, backed by its extensive storage and transplant data, and proven management expertise.

In response to regulatory advancements, including amendments to the Advanced Regenerative Medicine and Biopharmaceuticals Act, and increased stem cell research, Celltrion launched Korea’s pioneering Umbilical Tissue-Derived Stem Cell Storage Service in March.

While cord blood has demonstrated its therapeutic value with over 45,000 global transplants, umbilical tissue is emerging as a key player in regenerative medicine due to its abundance of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).

Preserving both resources provides a diverse stem cell portfolio, positioning families to leverage future breakthroughs in regenerative medicine.
