Daewoong Pharm has signed a domestic distribution agreement with AI-based digital healthcare company Hippocrates Labs for MediSafe, a distributed data backup and security solution for hospitals and clinics.

Under the agreement, Hippocrates Labs will handle solution development and technical support, while Daewoong Pharm will use its nationwide healthcare sales network to manage sales and marketing.

MediSafe separates hospital data from the primary operating system and backs it up independently. If medical data becomes inaccessible because of ransomware or another cyberattack, the system is designed to help restore the data needed for clinical operations.

The solution stores backup data separately from the hospital’s internal network, reducing the risk that operational and backup data could be compromised at the same time.

The need for healthcare data protection and recovery systems is increasing as medical institutions face growing cybersecurity threats. According to Korea’s Social Security Information Service, reported cyber incidents involving domestic medical institutions increased from 18 cases in 2020 to 71 cases in 2024.

A cyberattack that blocks access to medical records, test results, or other clinical information can disrupt prescriptions and patient care, making rapid data recovery an important part of healthcare continuity planning.

The growing use of AI and digital healthcare is also increasing the amount of medical data that hospitals need to manage. As electronic medical records, diagnostic results, medical images, and other digital information continue to expand, healthcare providers face not only privacy and security requirements but also the need to minimize interruptions to clinical services following a cyber incident.

Daewoong Pharm plans to use its existing network of healthcare institutions to expand the supply of data protection and recovery solutions. The company also plans to explore connections between the new infrastructure business and its existing digital healthcare offerings.

Choi Hyun-seop, CEO of Hippocrates Labs, said the solution is designed to reduce the burden of replacing existing systems or hiring dedicated security personnel while helping medical institutions quickly restore data required for patient care when an incident occurs.

Lee Chang-jae, CEO of Daewoong Pharm, said the company plans to expand beyond digital healthcare solutions supporting clinical and patient management into infrastructure that protects and restores medical data, with the goal of supporting stable digital operations at healthcare institutions.

AI is also a key part of Daewoong Pharm’s broader digital healthcare strategy. The company is exploring applications that analyze patient symptom records and biometric data to assess disease risks or the possibility of recurrence, while reducing repetitive administrative tasks so healthcare professionals can focus more on patient care.

Daewoong Pharm ultimately aims to build a platform that can support the global expansion of Korean healthcare technology. The company plans to establish real-world use cases and clinical evidence at Korean hospitals before using that experience as a foundation for entering overseas markets.
