The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) is set to introduce a one-time mandatory genetic test for its players.
ESPN reported on Tuesday that the WTA has updated its regulations to include gender testing based on biological sex. This move aims to maintain fairness in women’s professional tennis and ensure an equitable competitive environment for all players.
The new policy aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) eligibility criteria for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, introduced in March. It also complies with a sports-related executive order issued by former President Donald Trump.
While the WTA effectively follows the IOC’s guidelines, which are adhered to by Olympic sports organizations, the participation of transgender women in the Olympics remains a gray area.
Mandatory gender testing is already implemented in athletics, skiing, and boxing. However, these practices have faced criticism from human rights experts and activist groups.
Addressing these concerns, the WTA emphasized that this policy distinguishes between biological sex and gender identity. They stressed that it is not intended to disrespect or diminish anyone’s gender identity or dignity.
