Director Na Hong-jin of the film Hope has been honored with the Action Cinema Award at the 25th New York Asian Film Festival.

Plus M Entertainment, the film’s distributor, announced that Hope made its North American debut as the centerpiece screening at the festival on Monday.

Following the screening, Director Na engaged in an insightful Q&A session with the audience, delving deep into the film’s intricacies. The New York Asian Film Festival, launched in 2002, has become a premier showcase for Asian cinema in North America, featuring a diverse array of films from crowd-pleasing blockbusters to avant-garde independent works and genre-bending masterpieces.

Hope was selected for the prestigious centerpiece presentation, a flagship program that spotlights the festival’s most compelling offerings. During the event, Na had the opportunity to meet with Ari Aster, the acclaimed director behind Hereditary and Midsommar, who is rapidly gaining recognition as a cinematic visionary.

Hope weaves a gripping tale centered on Beom-seok, who oversees a branch office in the demilitarized zone. When local youth report a tiger sighting, the village is thrust into a state of high alert, grappling with an almost unbelievable reality.

This latest offering marks Na’s return to the director’s chair after a decade-long hiatus and secured a coveted spot in the main competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. Na’s consistent presence at Cannes – with all four of his directorial works being invited – has cemented his status as one of South Korea’s most esteemed filmmakers. His previous works, The Chaser and The Wailing, were featured in non-competitive sections, while The Yellow Sea garnered attention in the Un Certain Regard category.
