Shiho Kuwaki, the 23-year-old Japanese golfer who clinched victory at the AIG Women’s Open, the season’s final major in women’s golf, is renowned for her eye-catching fashion sense.
From her dramatically curled eyelashes to her long, ornate nails, Kuwaki stands out on the course. She’s often seen sporting vibrant, colorful outfits during tournaments. Even her golf balls are a departure from the norm – she opts for color balls instead of the traditional white.
With this triumph, Kuwaki has catapulted her unique style onto the global stage. Fashion is the source of confidence and joy, she beamed. She believes it’s played a part in her success on the course.
On August 2, Kuwaki emerged victorious at the 50th AIG Women’s Open, held at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England. She finished with a 5-under-par 279, tying with Germany’s Esther Henselait before clinching the win in a second playoff hole.
This win adds to Kuwaki’s impressive record, which includes five career victories on the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, two of which came earlier this year. By winning this LPGA major, she’s realized a long-held dream.
It’s surreal, Kuwaki said, still processing her achievement. Just being here was an honor. She tried to stay in the moment, enjoying each hole and shot. She added that winning as a Japanese player, following Yamashita’s success last year, makes this even more special.
Kuwaki also took a moment to acknowledge recent events back home, saying that her thoughts are with those affected by the recent earthquake in Kumamoto. She hopes for a swift recovery.

Kuwaki had plans to attempt LPGA Q-Series at year’s end, but that’s no longer necessary. She expressed that it’s extraordinary that this opportunity has come her way.

When asked about her style, Kuwaki shared that she changes her nails based on the mood. She enjoys having different designs on each hand. She added that as for the yellow golf balls, she uses them almost exclusively. They’re much easier to spot on the course.
