Los Angeles Football Club’s (LA FC) Son Heung-min aims to extend his goal-scoring streak to five consecutive official matches as they face Mexican powerhouse Chivas Guadalajara.
The clash is set for August 6 at 8:30 p.m. PT at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California, marking the first game of the 2026 Leagues Cup opening round.
The Leagues Cup, North America’s premier club competition, pits 18 teams each from Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX against each other in a 36-team tournament.
In the first round, each team faces three opponents from the opposing league. The top four teams from each league advance to the knockout stage, with the top three overall securing spots in next season’s Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Champions Cup.
After their CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal exit this season, LA FC is eager to add another trophy to their cabinet, following their 2022 MLS Cup triumph.
For Son, who’s yet to clinch a title with LA FC, the Leagues Cup offers a golden opportunity to secure his first championship with the club.
The MLS office has tipped LA FC as one of the favorites, highlighting Son’s recent goal-scoring form and his impressive playmaking abilities.
Since returning from the World Cup break, Son has been on fire, netting in four straight MLS matches. He kept the streak alive with the opener against the Vancouver Whitecaps on August 2.
Son also found the back of the net twice in last month’s MLS All-Star Game, making it five games in a row with a goal, though the exhibition match doesn’t count officially.
A goal against Chivas would match Son’s personal best of five consecutive official games with a goal, a feat he achieved with Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019-20 season.
