American golf sensation Scottie Scheffler has reclaimed his throne as the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour’s top player, securing the FedEx Cup for the second time in two years.
Scheffler put on a masterclass during the final round of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday. He carded an impressive 4-under-par 66, notching six birdies against two bogeys.
With a tournament total of 16-under-par 264, Scheffler outdueled Norway’s Viktor Hovland by three strokes, who finished at 13-under-par 267.
This victory crowns Scheffler as the FedEx Cup champion, cementing his status as the season’s premier golfer. It marks his second FedEx Cup triumph, following his previous win in 2022.
Scheffler’s win not only secured him the coveted trophy but also a staggering 10 million USD payday, propelling him past Tiger Woods to become the PGA Tour’s all-time money leader.
With career earnings now totaling 130,396,661 USD, Scheffler has dethroned Woods, who had held the top spot since February 2000 with 120,999,166 USD.
Entering the final round tied for third and trailing Hovland by three shots, Scheffler showcased his championship mettle.
He started strong with a pinpoint tee shot for a birdie on the par-3 second hole, followed by a clutch 24-foot birdie putt on the par-4 fourth.
Despite a minor setback with a bogey on the par-4 seventh, Scheffler quickly bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 eighth, closing out the front nine at 2-under.
As Hovland faltered, Scheffler seized control. He birdied the par-4 tenth and added another on the par-4 thirteenth, widening the gap between himself and the chasing pack.
A bogey on the par-4 fourteenth proved inconsequential. Scheffler all but sealed the deal with a birdie on the par-4 sixteenth, before coasting home with pars on the final two holes to clinch the title.
Hovland, who had seemed poised for victory, stumbled in the final round. He managed just one birdie against three bogeys, finishing at 13-under-par 267 for solo second place.
American Ryan Gerard claimed third at 12-under-par 268, while Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg, and Australia’s Min Woo Lee shared fourth place honors.
South Korean stars Si Woo Kim and Joohyung Tom Kim fell short of cracking the top 10.
Both finished tied for 14th at 9-under-par 271.
