Lee Jung-hoo (28, San Francisco Giants), nicknamed Grandson of the Wind, managed just one walk in six plate appearances.
On Wednesday, Lee started as the fifth batter and right fielder against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. He went 0-for-5 with a walk, an run batted in (RBI), and a run scored.
Lee has now reached base in eight straight games since August 25 against the Cincinnati Reds, but his season average dipped from .288 to .285.
He flied out to center in the first, to left in the third, and grounded out to short in the fifth before producing an RBI in his fourth at-bat.
With one out and bases loaded in the sixth, Lee hit a sharp grounder between first and second that looked like a hit, but Pirates second baseman Brandon Lau made a stellar play for the out. Turner Hill scored from third on the play, crediting Lee with an RBI.
Down 7-12 in the eighth with one out and runners on first and second, Lee drew a walk to load the bases.
The Giants capitalized, scoring five runs on an Osleivis Basabe bases-loaded walk, a Drew Cabrera double, and a Nate Furman timely hit to tie the game. Lee scored on Cabrera’s double.
Lee had a chance for a game-winning hit but couldn’t deliver.
With the score tied 12-12 in the ninth, two outs, and runners on second and third, Lee faced Pirates pitcher Mason Montgomery. He swung at a high curve but grounded out to second.
The Giants then suffered a heartbreaking 13-12 loss in the bottom of the ninth on a Basabe error with two outs and runners in scoring position.
Basabe fielded a grounder from Rafael Flores Jr. but his throw to first went wide, sealing the Giants’ fate.
The loss snapped San Francisco’s two-game win streak, dropping them to 57-82 and fourth place in the NL West.
