Tottenham’s Struggles: Can They Bounce Back After 5 Winless EPL Matches?

0

Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles continue as they remain winless in their first five matches of the English Premier League (EPL) season, with two draws and three losses.

On September 19, Spurs suffered a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa in the fifth round of the 2026-27 EPL at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

The North London club sits in 18th place with just 2 points after failing to secure a victory in their opening five fixtures.

Despite a late surge that saw Tottenham score twice, they couldn’t complete the comeback. The team had been goalless in their previous four league matches before finally breaking their duck in this encounter.

Aston Villa, who had also been winless this season, celebrated their first victory after five games. The win moves them to 15th place with a record of 1 win, 1 draw, and 3 losses (4 points).

Spurs faced an early setback when starting right-back Pedro Porro was forced off with an injury in the 19th minute of the first half.

Undeterred by the unexpected substitution, Tottenham regrouped quickly and ramped up their offensive efforts, peppering the Aston Villa goal. However, goalkeeper Suzuki Zion stood firm, denying crucial attempts from Archie Gray and Savio.

After weathering Tottenham’s storm, Aston Villa struck first during first-half stoppage time. Boubacar Kamara capitalized on a poor clearance by the Spurs defense, setting up Johan Mbeumo for a simple finish.

Tottenham made a tactical change at the start of the second half, bringing on Mohammed Kudus in place of Matheus Fernandes to inject fresh energy into their attack.

The home side maintained pressure and thought they had equalized on the hour mark when Kudus found the net. However, video assistant referee (VAR) intervened, and the goal was chalked off due to an offside in the build-up.

Having survived the scare, Aston Villa doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Nicolas Jackson combined brilliantly with Mbeumo on the edge of the Spurs penalty area before unleashing a stunning right-footed half-volley into the net.

The visitors put the game beyond doubt in the 79th minute. Emiliano Buendía received a pass from John McGinn and rifled a long-range effort past the Tottenham goalkeeper.

In response, Spurs introduced Conor Gallagher and Lucas Berival to shake up their midfield. The move paid dividends almost immediately, as Gallagher latched onto a Kudus pass and fired home with his right foot, finally breaking Tottenham’s league scoring drought this season.

Jan Paul van Hecke added a second for Tottenham deep into stoppage time, but it proved to be too little, too late as Spurs ran out of time to complete what would have been a remarkable comeback.
