The South Korean men’s table tennis team faced a formidable challenge at the Asian Championships, ultimately falling short against powerhouse China and securing a silver medal for the first time in five years.
On Friday, they succumbed to China with a match score of 0-3 in the finals of the 29th Asian Table Tennis Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
This marks South Korea’s return to the finals since the 2021 tournament, where they also claimed silver.
Notably, China’s absence from the 2021 event due to COVID-19 makes this year’s final appearance even more significant.
South Korea showed remarkable depth, reaching the finals despite missing key players like Jang Woo-jin (SeAH) and Lim Jong-hoon (Korea Exchange), who had competed in the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
In a stunning semifinal upset, Kang Dong-soo (Samsung Life) defeated world No. 3 Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan, propelling the team into the final.
However, the final against China proved to be a stark reality check.
World No. 158 Kang Dong-soo, leading off for South Korea, fell to Zhou Qihao (ranked 13th) in a hard-fought match, 1-3 (8-11, 5-11, 11-9, 9-11).
After dropping the first two games, Kang rallied to take the third but ultimately came up short in a tight fourth game.
Park Kyu-hyun (ranked 80th, Mirae Asset Securities) then faced Lin Shidong (world No. 9) in the second singles match, losing 0-3 (11-13, 8-11, 6-11) and pushing South Korea to the brink.
In the final singles match, Park Kang-hyun (world No. 46, Mirae Asset Securities) battled valiantly against Xiang Peng (ranked 33rd) but fell 1-3 (12-14, 7-11, 11-9, 7-11).
While South Korea was unable to secure a single match victory against China, their journey to the finals with a depleted roster highlighted the team’s competitive depth.
In related news, the South Korean women’s team claimed bronze after falling to China in the semifinals. With team events now concluded, South Korean athletes will shift their focus to individual events, including singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, beginning Friday as they hunt for additional medals.
