North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected the construction sites of a large-scale greenhouse complex farm in the northwestern region and embankment projects in Sinuiju and Uiju.
The Workers’ Party of Korea’s official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported that Comrade Kim conducted on-site guidance at the Wihwa Island Greenhouse Farm Complex construction site and the permanent embankment project in the island district of Sinuiju City and Uiju County.
Jo Yong-won, a party secretary, accompanied Kim, while Defense Minister No Kwang-chol and commanders of military joint units, along with design and related sector workers, greeted them.
Kim expressed satisfaction with the farm’s construction progress, noting that the unprecedented scale, originality, and comprehensiveness of the greenhouse farm project were proceeding according to schedule.
However, he emphasized the need for multi-functionality, versatility, and practicality in greenhouse construction, pointing out certain deficiencies.
Kim criticized the design of the railway station, stating that the fact that the station was designed solely as a passenger station, rendering it completely incapable of functioning as a cargo station, shows that the workers are still operating mechanically and passively, without economic calculations or logical thinking. He instructed that the station’s functional structure be redesigned to enhance its role as a comprehensive transportation hub and that new seaweed storage facilities be constructed alongside nearby processing plants.
He also outlined key tasks, including quality road construction throughout the island area, the creation of appropriate drainage systems, the training of farm technicians and skilled workers, and ensuring that agricultural machinery and equipment are ready for immediate production upon completion. Kim stressed the importance of incorporating additional projects such as cultural facilities and clinics into next year’s plans to improve residents’ welfare.
Kim emphasized that once modern housing lines the banks of the Yalu River and the large-scale, modernized greenhouse complex is established, the island area will become a distinctive hub for regional development, showcasing strong growth potential and symbolizing innovative progress.
The leader also inspected the permanent embankment construction in Sinuiju and Uiju County. According to the newspaper, units of the People’s Army had expedited the completion of the first phase of the embankment project.
Kim remarked that the floods that residents once considered their fate are now a thing of the past, adding that just as the Daedong River in Pyongyang has been developed, it’s also developing walking trails and riverside parks here; it is truly a remarkable transformation. He also commended the military personnel involved in the construction.
North Korea experienced severe flooding in the Sinuiju and Uiju areas in late July last year. Since then, over 15,000 new housing units have been built in the area. Construction of the extensive Wihwa Island farm, which surpasses the combined scale of all previously built greenhouse farms, began in February. In recent years, North Korea has completed several greenhouse farms, including the Jungpyuong Greenhouse Farm in 2018, the Ryonpho Greenhouse Farm in 2022, and the Gangdong Greenhouse Farm in 2024.
