The Chinese Embassy in North Korea hosted a celebration for the 80th anniversary of China’s Victory Day, inviting Choe Ryong-hae, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly.

The official newspaper of the Workers’ Party, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Thursday that a banquet commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was held on Wednesday. The event, organized by the Chinese Embassy, was attended by Chairman Choe, Minister of Culture Song Jong Gyu, Deputy Party Minister Mun Sung Hyok, Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong Ho, Vice Minister of External Economic Affairs Liu Eun Hae, and other officials.

In his speech, Chinese Ambassador to North Korea Wang Yajun emphasized that the hard-won victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan was not only a triumph for the Chinese people but also for all who cherish peace and justice worldwide. He underscored the blood alliance between North Korea and China, forged in the crucible of revolutionary struggle.

Ambassador Wang continued by praising Kim Il Sung’s significant contribution to China’s victory against Japanese invaders through his collaboration with the Northeast Counter-Japanese United Army. He affirmed that it is the unwavering policy of the Chinese Party and government to consistently uphold, strengthen, and advance the traditional friendship between China and North Korea.

In response, Minister Song delivered a speech, paying tribute to the martyrs from both nations who sacrificed their lives in the anti-Japanese struggle. He described the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan as a historic event that not only concluded World War II as a triumph for anti-fascist democratic forces but also significantly contributed to establishing independence, autonomy, and peace as fundamental principles in international relations.

Minister Song emphasized that it will collaborate with rgw Chinese comrades to continuously reinforce and develop the friendly cooperative relationship—established in pursuit of anti-imperialist independence and socialist goals—in line with the noble intentions of the leaders of their two parties and nations.

Prior to this event, a photo exhibition and commemorative banquet organized by the Consul General of China in Chongjin also took place.

Rodong Sinmun noted that such events were not reported last year. Despite designating 2024 as the Year of China-North Korea Friendship to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the two countries reportedly had limited national exchanges, leading to speculation that their relationship may be cooling.
