The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, revealed a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) called the Hwasong-20 in its coverage of the military parade celebrating the 80th anniversary of the party’s founding on October 11 / Rodong Sinmun

The government revealed on Monday that North Korea’s unveiling of the new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Hwasong-20, designed for attacking the U.S. mainland, during the October 10 parade marking the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party likely carries a calculated message for the U.S.

During a routine press briefing, Unification Ministry spokesperson Koo Byung-sam explained that Kim Jong Un delivered a verbal message to the U.S. and South Korea during the Supreme People’s Assembly held from September 20 to 21, preceding the parade. This time, it seems he opted for a non-verbal approach. Koo added that from Pyongyang’s standpoint, the mere display of their strategic weapons inherently conveys a powerful message.

Analysts suggest North Korea may soon conduct a test launch of the newly unveiled Hwasong-20, potentially ratcheting up tensions with Washington.

The Unification Ministry reports that North Korea has publicly showcased new strategic weapons prior to test launches on three occasions, including the Hwasong-20.
