An explosion and fire incident involving a Korean vessel in the Strait of Hormuz has occurred, drawing attention to the upcoming cabinet meeting to be chaired by President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday, as U.S. President Donald Trump proposed South Korea’s participation in Operation Freedom.

With President Trump defining this incident as an Iranian attack and pressuring South Korea to participate in military operations, it is expected that President Lee will engage in in-depth discussions with relevant ministers regarding the cause of the accident and response measures.

As concerns escalate not only for the affected vessel, crew, and their families, but also among the general public, there is keen interest in what message President Lee will convey to the nation.

Blue House Focuses on Determining Cause of Accident

According to the Blue House, President Lee will preside over the 20th Cabinet Meeting and 7th Emergency Economic Review Meeting at 10:00 a.m. (Korean time) today in the Blue House main building.

The key agenda is undoubtedly the Middle East response. The situation has been developing rapidly since the explosion and fire occurred on the Korean-flagged vessel HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.

The cause of the accident is a crucial variable. President Trump, through his social media, has defined this incident as an Iranian attack and stated that it seems to be time for South Korea to participate in the operation (Project Freedom). Project Freedom is a U.S.-led military operation to extract ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Blue House maintains that a cautious approach is necessary, warning against hasty judgments. Given that if this incident is revealed to be an Iranian attack, it could lead to significant diplomatic repercussions, the priority is for the South Korean government to accurately determine the cause.

Parallel Consideration of Securing Ship Safety and U.S. Operation Participation
It is unlikely that an official government announcement will be made today. The Blue House held a review meeting yesterday, chaired by Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik, and stated that an accurate analysis of the accident’s cause is expected to take several days. The government is likely to prepare various scenarios based on the cause of the accident.

Ensuring the safety of the ships has also emerged as an urgent task. With heightened concerns for the 26 Korean ships anchored in the Strait of Hormuz following this incident, there is interest in whether additional directives will be issued to protect the vessels and crew.

Furthermore, the decision on whether to participate in Project Freedom is expected to be a major consideration. The Blue House stated yesterday that they are reviewing President Trump’s request for operational participation. This marks the first time the government has officially considered what is essentially a U.S. request for troop deployment since the Middle East situation began.

Domestic Issues: From Special Prosecutor Law to Union Conflicts
Additionally, there is focus on whether President Lee will directly address social issues such as the Special Prosecutor Law for Fabricated Indictments (Dismissal of Charges) and the Samsung Electronics Union General Strike.

On Monday, President Lee called for a slowdown in the Democratic Party’s push for the Special Prosecutor Law on fabricated indictments, requesting a process of gathering public opinion and deliberation. However, the People Power Party continues to criticize it as a self-dismissal of charges.

There is also interest in whether he will take a stance on the labor-labor conflict within Samsung Electronics. On April 30, President Lee issued a warning message seemingly aimed at Samsung Electronics, stating that some labor unions were causing harm to other workers through excessive demands.

Since then, discontent with union actions has grown within Samsung Electronics, leading to an expansion of labor-labor conflicts. Following President Lee’s remarks, the Samsung Electronics union shifted blame to the LG Uplus union, resulting in a clash.
