Germany’s Rheinmetall to Establish Japan’s First Defense Production Hub: What This Means for Asia-Pacific Security

German defense giant Rheinmetall is making moves to establish its first defense industry production base in Japan, according to a report by Jiji Press on Monday.

The company has expressed a strong commitment to bolstering security in the Asia-Pacific region and plans to initiate talks with Japanese firms in the near future.

A Rheinmetall spokesperson emphasized their aim to develop projects that create export opportunities in Japan in collaboration with the local industrial sector, highlighting their desire for active engagement with Japan’s industry and political spheres.

This strategic move by Rheinmetall aligns with the broader trend of intensified defense industry cooperation between Japan and the European Union (EU), aimed at enhancing military capabilities.

While Rheinmetall currently produces automotive components such as electric water pumps in Japan through its subsidiaries, it has yet to establish any defense-related facilities in the country.

In a recent interview with the Nihon Keizai Shimbun on June 19, Rheinmetall Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Armin Papperger confirmed that the company is actively pursuing the establishment of a defense-related production base in Japan through a joint venture with Japanese firms.

Papperger expressed enthusiasm about expanding Rheinmetall’s presence in Japan, stating that he plans to visit the country soon for discussions with industry leaders and government officials.
