Go Woo Suk of the Miami Marlins, who aimed to make his MLB debut in 2024 but remained in the minor leagues, has received a final opportunity.
Go, who plays for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, was named on Tuesday as one of 24 non-roster invitees for the MLB spring training roster announced by the Marlins.
The Marlins will hold their spring training at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Florida.
As part of the invitee list, Go will begin training on February 13, the scheduled reporting date for pitchers and catchers. The full squad is set to report on February 18.
According to local media, 64 players are expected to attend the camp, with the team narrowing the roster down to 26 players for the opening day.
Go signed a two-year contract with the San Diego Padres ahead of the 2024 season but failed to make the opening-day roster and was not called up to the majors throughout the season.
To make matters worse, he was traded to the Miami Marlins as part of the Luis Arraez trade last May. However, Miami did not add him to its MLB roster; instead, it assigned him to its Triple-A affiliate, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
Even at Triple-A, opportunities were scarce. Within a month, the Marlins placed Go on waivers. After Go decided to stay with the organization, he was reassigned to their Double-A affiliate, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
In 16 Triple-A games, Go recorded 2 wins, 1 hold, and an ERA of 4.29. However, he struggled in 28 Double-A games, with 2 wins, 3 losses, 3 holds, 3 saves, and an ERA of 8.04.
In Pensacola, he posted 2 wins, 2 losses, 2 saves, and an ERA of 10.42. Across all levels of the minors last year, he accumulated 4 wins, 3 losses, 4 holds, 3 saves, and an ERA of 6.54.
Fish On First, a media outlet covering the Marlins, reported that the team must pay Go $2.25 million. Inviting him to spring training before giving up on him entirely is not a bad decision.
