Samsung SDI will be signing a battery supply contract for ESS (Energy Storage System) worth approximately $894 million.

According to industry sources, on July 4, Samsung SDI is finalizing a 6.3GWh contract with the American power company NextEra Energy. The main product is known as Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.5. SBB is a product that installs high-nickel nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) battery cells, modules, and racks in Samsung SDI’s Premium ESS model 20-foot container. SBB 1.5 has implemented a capacity of 5.26MWh, which is 37% higher than before, by loading many batteries due to the efficient use of internal space.

The ESS market is expected to grow in tandem with the expansion of renewable energy. According to market research firm SNE Research, this year’s ESS market size is expected to increase to $40 billion, a 27% increase from 2023.

The current global ESS market is dominated by Chinese products that emphasize price competitiveness. Samsung SDI is responding with products such as SBB 1.5 instead of China’s main Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. A Samsung SDI official said, “We cannot confirm anything related to our clients.”
