Kim Seong-hoon, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Upstage, addressed the potential collaboration with AMD, stating that it needs a substantial number of chips, so it’ll have to source them at competitive prices.

Speaking to reporters at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul’s Jongno district on the morning of Thursday, Kim discussed the prospects of partnering with AMD.

When asked if acquiring the portal Daum would require a significant number of graphics processing units (GPUs), he simply replied, That’s correct, before stepping into an elevator.

Kim is scheduled to meet with AMD CEO Lisa Su later that day. The two are expected to explore collaboration opportunities in AI accelerators for data centers and central processing units (CPUs).

Upstage recently agreed to acquire the portal Daum from Kakao. The company is likely to leverage Daum’s data to train its large language model (LLM), Solar.

This development suggests that AMD might supply Upstage with data center central processing units (CPUs), such as the EPYC series, and artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators as part of their potential partnership.

In related news, following her visits to Naver and Samsung Electronics the previous day, CEO Lisa Su is set to meet with Ha Jung-woo, the Presidential Chief AI Officer, later today.
