LG Electronics is spearheading an initiative to empower youth with disabilities by enhancing their artificial intelligence (AI) skills, aiming to boost their educational and career prospects.

The company announced on Tuesday that it will host the 2026 Global Information Technology (IT) Challenge for Youth with Disabilities (GITC) in Daejeon at the Ramada by Wyndham Daejeon on July 15-16. This prestigious event is co-hosted by LG and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, with LG Electronics and the Korea Disabled People’s Rehabilitation Association overseeing its organization.

GITC, established in 2011, has been at the forefront of enhancing IT skills among youth with disabilities and facilitating their integration into society. The competition has seen remarkable participation, with over 5,000 contestants from 41 countries over the past 15 years. The previous year’s event gained particular prominence as the sole disability-focused initiative held in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit in South Korea.

This year’s Korean competition will bring together 60 young participants with disabilities from 17 regions across the nation. They will compete in four cutting-edge categories: e-Combination, focusing on AI-driven information retrieval and document processing; e-Creative, assessing autonomous vehicle programming skills; e-Content, evaluating video production capabilities; and e-Interactive, challenging participants to create AI-powered games responsive to movement, voice, and facial expressions.

The top four performers will advance to the world competition, set to take place in Da Nang, Vietnam, for three days starting October 27.

In preparation for the Korean competition, LG Electronics has partnered with the Korea Disabled People’s Rehabilitation Association to offer comprehensive pre-event training. This includes instruction in generative AI applications, video production techniques, and block coding, delivered through both online and in-person sessions. The goal is to equip participants with practical AI skills applicable to their daily lives and future careers. Those advancing to the world competition will receive additional intensive training in September.

GITC has proven to be a powerful catalyst for social mobility, helping many participants transition into IT-related educational programs and careers. A prime example is Shin Gi-hoon, the 2011 Vietnam competition winner, who pursued computer science and is now a doctoral candidate at Pusan National University, specializing in AI implementation for smart devices.

Yoon Dae-sik, Executive Vice President of External Cooperation at LG Electronics, emphasized the company’s commitment: Through GITC, it aims to empower youth who have dreams and talents in IT, helping them overcome disabilities and emerge as future leaders equipped with advanced AI capabilities.

These initiatives align closely with LG’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management strategy. ESG management extends beyond financial profitability, encompassing environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and transparent governance to ensure sustainable corporate growth.

This approach is widely recognized as an effective method for integrating non-financial values across business operations, mitigating long-term risks, and building trust among stakeholders, including investors.
