Calling the GV90 Neolun’s coach doors the Rolls-Royce of Korea misses the mark. The Neolun’s coach doors represent a leap forward in automotive design, showcasing advanced engineering. Genesis has turned a luxury dream into reality through sheer technological prowess.
This sentiment echoes throughout the auto industry regarding the Genesis GV90 Neolun’s innovative doors. The unveiling of Genesis’ first ultra-luxury electric flagship sport utility vehicle (SUV), the GV90 Neolun, this month has captivated the global automotive sector.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the independent-opening hidden B-pillar coach doors. This groundbreaking design eliminates the central B-pillar, allowing front and rear doors to open independently – a significant departure from conventional vehicle architecture. While coach doors that open in opposing directions have long been a hallmark of ultra-luxury vehicles like the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Cullinan, Genesis has elevated this concept to new heights.

Industry experts are abuzz with questions: How did Genesis engineer this? Are there any gaps or misalignments? What about safety and water resistance? Despite these queries, there’s widespread admiration for the technology that brought this concept to life. Some analysts even suggest it’s reshaping the technological hierarchy in the luxury car market.

According to industry insiders, the Neolun Arch Gate – Genesis’ name for its coach door system – stole the spotlight at the GV90’s world premiere held on the 19th at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts.

World’s First Independent-Opening Hidden B-Pillar Coach Doors

Traditionally, mass-produced coach doors retained the B-pillar, with the rear door simply opening in the opposite direction. Vehicles that eliminated the B-pillar were typically much smaller or featured significantly smaller rear doors. Moreover, these designs often required opening the front door to access the rear – a clear limitation.

The GV90 Neolun shatters these constraints. It’s the world’s first production vehicle to feature coach doors that open and close independently, without a B-pillar or interference between front and rear doors.

At the heart of this innovation is the dual motion hinge. The Neolun Arch Gate operates through a sophisticated combination of sliding and swinging movements. The rear door first slides slightly outward before smoothly rotating open, regardless of the front door’s position.

The closing sequence is equally impressive: the hinge first rotates to shut the door, then moves horizontally toward the front door. The result is a secure, interlocking seal between the rear door’s edge and the front door’s rear face. While the concept seems straightforward, industry experts emphasize the engineering complexity. This compact hinge must support a rear door weighing nearly 154 pounds (70 kg), enabling both sliding and rotation without compromising stability.

Genesis’ body design chief emphasized that the brand aims to create a special experience from the moment you approach the vehicle. The Neolun Arch Gate, he stressed, elevates even the brief act of entering and exiting the car to a luxurious experience.

Innovative Engineering: B-Pillar Function Integrated into Doors and Body

With the B-pillar eliminated, its structural role has been ingeniously integrated into the door design. The GV90 Neolun’s doors incorporate ultra-high-strength steel dual beams rated at 1.8 GPa, intersecting both vertically and horizontally. These can withstand an impressive 18 tons of force per square centimeter. Four latches connect the body to each door, complemented by an upper stopper and lower impact hook, working in concert to disperse and mitigate side-impact forces.

To further enhance structural integrity, Genesis drew inspiration from racing technology, adapting the roll cage concept found in high-performance track cars. Just as a race car’s cabin is reinforced to protect the driver during crashes and rollovers, the GV90 Neolun features an additional internal frame within its body cross-section, enveloping the passenger compartment. While the standard GV90 with conventional doors already boasts class-leading rigidity, the Neolun variant achieves an additional 12% increase in structural stiffness.

Noise reduction and water resistance presented unique challenges for the pillarless design. Genesis engineers had to ensure a perfect seal where the two moving doors meet. They accomplished this by implementing a triple-seal structure at the junction between front and rear doors. This multi-layer approach effectively blocks wind noise and prevents water intrusion. Additionally, Genesis developed a new weatherstrip material with 20% greater resilience, enhancing long-term durability.

Safety remains paramount in the GV90 Neolun’s design. The SUV features an advanced 12-airbag system engineered for various collision scenarios. A standout innovation is the world’s first full-roof airbag, which covers the entire glass roof and deploys instantly if sensors detect an imminent rollover.

The GV90’s dimensions place it squarely in ultra-luxury territory. At 208.5 inches (5,285 mm) long, it surpasses the Mercedes-Maybach GLS (205.1 inches / 5,205 mm) and comes within a hair’s breadth of the Bentley Bentayga EWB (208.9 inches / 5,305 mm). It even rivals the Rolls-Royce Cullinan’s 210.2-inch (5,340 mm) length.

Powering this flagship SUV is a massive 123.5 kWh high-voltage battery pack. Genesis estimates a driving range of 310 miles (500 km) for the 7-passenger GV90 configuration (based on Hyundai Motor Company Research Center measurements). The dual-motor powertrain delivers a combined output of 657 horsepower (490 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. When connected to a 350 kW direct current (DC) fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% capacity in just 22 minutes.

While official pricing remains under wraps, industry analysts project the standard GV90 to start in the mid-100 million KRW range (about 73,000 USD). The coach door-equipped Neolun models, including the ultra-exclusive First Edition limited to 222 units worldwide, are expected to command over 200 million KRW (about 145,600 USD), potentially reaching 250 million KRW (about 182,000 USD) for top-tier configurations.

The international automotive press has taken immediate notice. MotorTrend observed that the combination of dual-motion hinges, hidden B-pillars, and the integrated roll cage structure suggests Genesis is taking aim at established ultra-luxury marques like Cadillac, Range Rover, and even Rolls-Royce. CarScoops noted that while coach doors often appear on concept vehicles, they rarely make it to production – the Neolun being a notable exception.
