Samsung Electronics is set to release a free theme for Galaxy smartphones, reimagining the Joseon Dynasty folk painting Hojakdo (Tiger and Magpie). The decision came after a video featuring the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with Hojakdo characters amassed over 12 million views, prompting the company to create an official theme in response to user demand.

From October 16 through December 15, Samsung Electronics will offer the Hojakdo Galaxy Theme at no cost to Galaxy smartphone users worldwide. The theme will be available for download and installation via the Galaxy Store.

Hojakdo, a folk painting from the Joseon era, depicts a tiger warding off misfortune alongside a magpie heralding good news, symbolizing wishes for prosperity.

Samsung has given the Hojakdo tiger a modern twist, reimagining it as a friendly, whimsical character accompanied by a cute tiger cub. The inclusion of the magpie character preserves elements of traditional Korean culture.

The theme boasts a background inspired by traditional landscape paintings and incorporates classic cloud motifs. Traditional design elements are woven throughout the user interface (UI), including wallpapers, call screens, messaging windows, keyboards, and icons.

This theme is a direct result of user feedback. Samsung’s Hojakdo x Galaxy Z Fold 8 video, released on their official YouTube and Instagram channels in September, quickly went viral, surpassing 12 million views.

In response to numerous comments requesting Hojakdo character wallpapers or themes, Samsung decided to offer the theme free of charge.

Samsung is also tapping into the growing trend of smartphone personalization, particularly among younger users. The company recently hosted the Fold Challenge from September 18 to October 5, encouraging Galaxy Z Fold 8 owners to showcase their device customizations.

Since last year, Samsung has been promoting content that draws on traditional Korean culture through outdoor advertising in major urban hubs like Seoul Station and across its global social media platforms. The tech giant plans to further expand its marketing efforts that highlight Korea’s rich cultural heritage.
