LG Display Hits 50 Million OLED TV Sales: What This Means for Future Display Technology

TechLG Display Hits 50 Million OLED TV Sales: What This Means for Future Display Technology

LG Display announced on Wednesday that it has reached a milestone of 50 million cumulative sales of large organic light-emitting diode (OLED) television (TV) panels since pioneering their sale in 2013.

The company has been at the forefront of the market, continuously improving OLED technology in terms of size, picture quality, and performance, offering a comprehensive range of TV panels from 40 to 90 inches.

This achievement is particularly significant as it represents the culmination of 13 years of relentless innovation in technology and product development, aimed at establishing and expanding the OLED market.

LG Display made history in 2013 by introducing the world’s first 55-inch OLED TV panel. The company continued to break new ground, unveiling the world’s first 88-inch 8K OLED TV panel in 2018, and in 2022, began mass production of the world’s largest 97-inch OLED TV panel.

After hitting its first 10 million units sold in 2020, LG Display’s sales milestones accelerated rapidly: 20 million in 2021, 30 million in 2023, 40 million in 2025, and surpassing the 50 million mark this year.

Building on its success in commercializing white OLEDs (WOLED) for TVs, LG Display has expanded its technology into the monitor market.

The company has leveraged its WOLED expertise and manufacturing experience from large OLED TV panels to enter the PC monitor segment.

While OLED refers to the broader display technology that self-emits light, WOLED specifically uses white OLED emission as a base for color implementation.

WOLED technology is gaining traction in the monitor market, where factors like text clarity, refresh rates, and response times are crucial due to closer viewing distances compared to TVs.

Capitalizing on WOLED’s rapid response characteristics, LG Display has introduced high refresh rates and Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR) technology, tailored for gaming applications.

The company is driving growth in WOLED-based gaming monitors, offering a diverse range of sizes and cutting-edge technology, from 45-inch 21:9 monitors to 24.5-inch esports displays. LG Display is also expanding WOLED technology into office and professional applications.

LG Display Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jeong Cheol-dong stated that reaching the 50 million OLED unit milestone is a testament to the employees’ dedication in overcoming numerous challenges and navigating a complex business landscape.

He further emphasized that leveraging the 13-year legacy of industry-leading OLED technology, it’s poised to rapidly secure a differentiated future with next-generation display innovations that surpass current capabilities.
