Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel addressed North Korea’s involvement in the Ukraine war on Tuesday, stating that the Netherlands shares the same sense of threat as South Korea.

Minister van Weel met with South Korea’s Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young at the Government Seoul Complex on the same day. He remarked that while the Netherlands is geographically distant from North Korea, their participation in the Ukraine war has brought them face-to-face with the same threats South Korea confronts.

He continued that the current geopolitical climate demands more timely action than ever before. Van Weel emphasized the numerous commonalities between the two nations, particularly in their commitment to robust democratic principles, a rules-based international order, and the pursuit of an open and fair trade system.

In response, Minister Chung acknowledged that they’re acutely aware of European citizens’ deep concerns. Reducing tensions and confrontations on the Korean Peninsula is intrinsically linked to peace in Europe. He urged the international community to play an active role in this endeavor.

Minister Chung outlined the Lee Jae Myung administration’s objective, stating that its goal is to make this year the foundation for peaceful coexistence between North and South Korea. It aims to resume dialogue and reinitiate exchanges and cooperation to de-escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Both parties concurred that North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia poses a simultaneous threat to European and Korean Peninsula security. The Ministry of Unification reported that this agreement underscored the growing necessity for international cooperation on Korean Peninsula issues.
