On Thursday, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in France to discuss follow-up measures from recent high-level diplomatic engagements and explore ways to enhance cooperation between their two nations.

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Minister Cho, who was in France for the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held bilateral talks with Minister Vieira. The two diplomats exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations, including follow-up actions from Brazilian President Lula da Silva’s state visit to South Korea in February, as well as regional issues of mutual concern.

Minister Cho highlighted that President Lula’s state visit had elevated the bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, noting that the two countries have never been closer. He proposed enhancing strategic communication, economic and trade cooperation, and practical collaboration across various sectors. In response, Minister Vieira concurred that the visit marked a significant milestone in their relations and conveyed President Lula’s message expressing hope to maintain the momentum of cooperation through a reciprocal visit by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to Brazil.

The ministers also discussed the global economic outlook, the situation in the Middle East, denuclearization efforts on the Korean Peninsula, and policies regarding North Korea. Addressing recent energy supply concerns, Minister Cho proposed measures for cooperation, including the possibility of increasing Brazil’s crude oil exports to South Korea.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry assessed that this high-level meeting served to review the outcomes of President Lula’s state visit, discuss the implementation of follow-up actions, and continue the momentum of senior-level exchanges following recent diplomatic engagements between the two nations.
