Lee Yong-kyun, a chief prosecutor (Judicial Research and Training Institute class 34), has joined the second comprehensive special counsel team led by Special Counsel Kwon Chang-young, which is investigating allegations that former President Yoon Suk Yeol was involved in the Ssangbangwool remittance case to North Korea.

According to legal sources on the 17th, Lee was officially assigned to the special counsel team the previous day (16th). He is expected to serve as head of the dedicated investigation team handling the Ssangbangwool remittance case to North Korea.

Prior to this appointment, Lee served as a human rights protection officer at the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office. He previously held positions including human rights protection officer at the Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office, head of the Criminal Division 1 at the Masan Branch Office and head of the Criminal Division 2 at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office.

The special counsel team said it received the case earlier this month from a human rights violation review task force under the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office and has since formed a dedicated team. The team is expected to consist of Lee and two special investigators.

On the previous day (16th), the special counsel team also replaced the assistant special counsel in charge of the case, appointing Kim Chi-heon in place of Kwon Young-bin.
