Spinal implant manufacturer L&K Biomed said Wednesday that it successfully completed the first human surgery using its BluEX-LT curved expandable interbody cage at WakeMed Health & Hospitals in North Carolina.

According to the company, the procedure was performed on a patient with spinal deformity and marked the first clinical application of a new deformity-correction surgical technique utilizing the BluEX-LT device.

The BluEX-LT was developed to address limitations associated with conventional lateral fusion cages. The curved, height-expandable implant is designed to improve restoration of lumbar lordosis and enhance spinal alignment correction during surgery.

The company said the implant’s curved structure allows for more stable fixation to the vertebral endplate, helping reduce the risk of postoperative implant subsidence while improving overall spinal alignment outcomes.

L&K Biomed plans to leverage the successful procedure to accelerate adoption of its expandable cage portfolio in the United States and expand its distribution network.

“The significance of this surgery extends beyond the first clinical use of BluEX-LT, as it demonstrates new possibilities in the treatment of spinal deformities,” a company official said. “We expect the achievement to strengthen the product’s competitiveness and support further market expansion in the U.S.”

Separately, L&K Biomed said it plans to submit a U.S. Food and Drug Administration application this year for its Stand-alone Cervical Expandable Cage, as part of efforts to complete its full lineup of cervical spine products.
