In March 2023, General Motors (GM) introduced the Chevrolet Trax Crossover to the Korean market, carving out a niche in the domestic compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment with its impressive value proposition. This model stands out by offering generous space for its class and delivering powertrain performance well-suited for urban driving, all while maintaining a price point below 20 million KRW (approximately 13,000 USD) across all trim levels.

The 2026 model year’s new RS Midnight Edition adds a bold visual punch. It features a blacked-out front grille bar and 18-inch alloy wheels that match the glossy exterior, enhancing the already robust appearance of the top-tier RS trim. The addition of standard Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and a power liftgate further boosts its appeal and value.

I recently had the opportunity to put the Trax Crossover RS Midnight Edition through its paces, covering about 200 km (about 124 miles) of urban and highway driving around the capital region from June 9 to 11. The vehicle’s fundamental driving characteristics immediately caught my attention. While the specs of its 1.2-liter turbo gasoline engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission might not suggest stellar performance on paper, the real-world city driving experience told a different story. The engine delivered impressive torque at low speeds, resulting in peppy acceleration and responsive re-acceleration when needed.

At higher speeds, there was a slight lag in downshifts when calling for more power, revealing the limitations of the smaller displacement engine. However, the Trax Crossover’s driving stability surpassed expectations. The vehicle felt planted and composed, with minimal body roll even during sharp turns. Its road-holding abilities were impressive, giving the sensation of being glued to the pavement. The lower ride height compared to typical compact SUVs contributed to a more sedan-like driving experience.

The braking performance was another standout feature. The brake pedal provided a reassuringly firm feel rather than a spongy sensation, inspiring confidence. During deceleration, the vehicle maintained its composure without any unsettling body movements. The suspension tuning leaned towards the firmer side, transmitting road imperfections more directly but not to the point of compromising comfort. This firmness actually enhanced high-speed stability and body control during cornering. In real-world testing, the Trax Crossover achieved a respectable 13.0 km/L (about 30.5 mpg) in mixed city and highway driving.

Noise suppression was notably effective. Despite not featuring acoustic glass, the vehicle did an admirable job of minimizing wind noise at highway speeds. Engine and road noise intrusion into the cabin was minimal, allowing for easy conversation and enjoyable music listening without the need to crank up the volume. It’s worth noting that even the base LS trim comes equipped with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology, which helps counteract external noise for a quieter ride.

The interior layout is clean and functional. The 11-inch center display is slightly angled towards the driver for improved visibility. Physical buttons and dials below the screen allow for intuitive climate control adjustments. A traditional gear selector for Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive is conveniently positioned. While the lack of built-in navigation is a minor drawback, the standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration helps mitigate this issue.

The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system, while a welcome addition, has some limitations. It offers lane departure warning but lacks full lane-keeping assistance. The system also doesn’t include stop-and-go functionality for heavy traffic situations. However, a useful feature is the display of following distance in seconds, helping drivers maintain safe spacing on the highway.

The air conditioning system impressed with its powerful performance. Even at low fan speeds, it rapidly cooled the cabin, reminiscent of the robust climate control systems found in older Daewoo models. The retention of physical controls for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is a practical touch, allowing for easy adjustments without distracting from the road.

One of the Trax Crossover’s standout features is its class-above interior space. With an overall length of 4,540 mm and a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, it outsizes competitors like the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos. This translates to generous rear-seat accommodations, with ample knee room and headroom for adult passengers. The flat rear floor further enhances versatility, making the center seat more usable for a third passenger.

The 2026 Trax Crossover RS Midnight Edition combines solid fundamentals with eye-catching style. Its all-black exterior accents elevate the design, while the spacious interior, stable driving dynamics, and efficient fuel economy of 13.0 km/L (about 30.5 mpg) make it a compelling daily driver. Despite some limitations in its driver assistance features and the absence of built-in navigation, the Trax Crossover remains highly competitive when factoring in its price point and segment positioning.

While produced at GM’s Incheon-Bupyeong plant in Korea, the Trax Crossover has found particular success in the U.S. market. Since its export debut in June 2023, it has achieved annual sales of 200,000 units, outperforming the Subaru Crosstrek to claim the top spot in compact SUV sales for two consecutive years. With GM’s recent 600 million USD investment pledge in its Korean operations, the Trax Crossover is well-positioned to continue its success both domestically and abroad in the coming months.
