Samsung is set to unveil the key features of its new Galaxy foldable phone on July 22.

On Wednesday, Samsung Electronics revealed its groundbreaking Flex Titanium display technology, which will debut in this latest foldable device.

This innovative technology significantly enhances the display’s durability while dramatically improving screen folds, offering users a smoother and more refined viewing experience. By seamlessly integrating cutting-edge display technology, revolutionary materials, and precision engineering, Samsung is charting a new course for the global mobile industry.

Samsung has reimagined the display structure, maximizing the visual immersion that foldable products are known for while optimizing the display’s thinness, flexibility, and durability. The company has introduced a titanium alloy film to replace plastic film and developed a unique dual-titanium structure by incorporating an upgraded titanium plate.

After extensive research, Samsung opted for titanium due to its high elasticity and strength, making it ideal for the intricate design requirements of foldable displays. This material ensures durability against repeated folding and external impacts.

While titanium is renowned for its reliability in extreme environments like aerospace, applying it to foldable displays posed significant technical hurdles due to the need for thinness and flexibility. Samsung overcame these challenges with its proprietary technology, successfully implementing titanium in two critical components.

The titanium alloy film, situated beneath the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel inside the display, is crafted from advanced titanium alloy material. It achieves about 20 times the stiffness of polymer films, significantly enhancing durability and reducing screen creases.

Remarkably, through ultra-precision rolling processes, this film is about one-third the thickness of a human hair, contributing to the slim profile of the display panel. The titanium plate, positioned beneath the titanium alloy film, supports the display during folding and unfolding. Advanced hole processing technology has significantly reduced the size of micro-holes at the fold point, resulting in a robust adhesive structure that stabilizes the screen when opened and maximizes flexibility when closed, drastically improving fold quality.

Moreover, the new design incorporates high-resolution features and next-generation organic materials, delivering outstanding image quality while significantly reducing display power consumption for enhanced energy efficiency. The Flex Titanium technology, with its perfect balance of robust durability, smooth flexibility, and structural stability, is set to establish a new benchmark for foldable display technology with its slim design and innovative fold improvements.

Moon Sung-hoon, Vice President of hardware at Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience (MX) division, stated that Samsung’s competitive edge lies in the deep understanding of consumer needs and the ability to integrate technology that brings real value to everyday life. The next-generation Galaxy foldable, born from years of accumulated display technology expertise, will offer an unprecedented viewing experience and revolutionize user interaction.

Yoo Kyung-jin, Vice President of the product development team at Samsung Display, explained that the titanium plate used in this new product achieves both flexibility and durability through micro-hole processing at the fold. Combined with high-resolution design and the application of new organic materials, it has significantly enhanced the power efficiency and overall competitiveness of the next-generation Galaxy foldable.

Samsung Electronics is scheduled to hold an Unpacked event on July 22 at 2:00 p.m. local time at Old Billingsgate in London, where it will unveil a new horizontally expansive foldable phone, following in the footsteps of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip.
