L&K Biomed announced on Friday that a surgery utilizing its chest wall implant device, Pectus, was successfully completed at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona.
The operation was performed by Dr. Dawn Jaroszewski, a thoracic surgery specialist at Mayo Clinic and president of the Chest Wall International Group (CWIG). Dr. Jaroszewski is a leading authority in adult chest wall deformity correction and is recognized as one of the most experienced surgeons in chest wall procedures worldwide.
L&K Biomed noted that following its adoption at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the product’s use at Mayo Clinic further solidifies its clinical references in major U.S. medical institutions.
Mayo Clinic consistently ranks at the top of U.S. News & World Report’s annual hospital evaluations. It is also a key reference site for global medical device companies seeking to establish clinical credibility for their new products.
The surgery employed the company’s innovative Sandwich Technique. This method offers a minimally invasive approach to treating complex chest wall deformities, contrasting with traditional open surgeries that require large chest incisions.
The company reports that while patients with complex chest wall deformities often required the Ravitch Technique, involving incisions in the sternum and costal cartilage, the Sandwich Technique using Pectus allows for smaller incisions while ensuring stable fixation. This advancement is being hailed as a promising new treatment option.
Dr. Jaroszewski commented that without the Sandwich Technique, this patient would have faced a 5-6 hour Ravitch procedure. The ability to treat the patient using a minimally invasive approach instead of an open surgery, which carries higher risks of bleeding and physical stress, marks a significant advancement in patient care.
With Pectus recently surpassing monthly sales of 1 billion KRW (approximately 698,000 USD), L&K Biomed aims to expand its supply to major U.S. hospitals and increase the number of surgeries performed.
