LG Electronics announced on Wednesday that it has pioneered the application of its cutting-edge 5G telematics solution, based on the R16 communication standard, in mass-produced European vehicles.

This marks a industry first for R16-based vehicle telematics solutions in European production cars. The smart telematics solution integrates the telematics control unit (TCU) and antenna into a single module, representing next-generation technology.

The system boasts a data error rate of just 0.001%, while the data transmission delay between the telematics module and base station has been slashed to 0.001 seconds (1 ms), representing 100-fold and 5-fold improvements over 4G, respectively.

R16 is the second-generation standard that builds upon R15’s 5G commercialization focus, enhancing both performance and stability. It supports ultra-reliable, low-latency communication, boosting data transmission reliability and reducing latency compared to its predecessor.

This solution transcends mere component integration, serving as crucial infrastructure for the era of software-defined vehicles (SDV) and artificial intelligence-driven vehicles (AIDV).

It enables over-the-air (OTA) software updates, real-time vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, and high-capacity data transmission for autonomous driving systems.

The R16-based smart telematics provides more stable implementation of these features, creating an ideal communication environment for autonomous driving, where rapid responses and safety are paramount.

The ultra-reliable, low-latency communication offered by this next-gen smart telematics forms the foundation for enhancing LG’s software solution for SDV and AIDV, known as LG αWare.

LG αWare comprises vehicle entertainment solutions like PlayWare, MetaWare for AR/MR and AI-based user experiences, and VisionWare, an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) solution leveraging AI algorithms and camera sensors.

LG Electronics’ next-gen smart telematics solution also features upgrades in performance and vehicle exterior design. Traditional vehicle communication systems used separate structures for the telematics module and the protruding shark-fin antenna.

As communication functions expanded to include 5G, Wi-Fi, V2X, and GNSS, the number of antennas increased, necessitating their distribution throughout the vehicle due to space constraints in the shark fin.

LG has ingeniously combined the communication module with up to 12 antennas into a single hardware unit, minimizing signal loss at connection points and simplifying wiring structures and spatial arrangements.

This innovation allows automakers to reduce installation space within vehicles and lower costs. The elimination of the shark-fin antenna also enables sleeker exterior designs.

The stability and reliability of the smart telematics have been significantly enhanced. It’s engineered to deliver superior connection quality across diverse global communication environments, including challenging conditions like high-temperature desert driving.

Eun Seok-hyun, President of LG’s VS Division, stated that it will continue to introduce groundbreaking solutions in vehicle communications, a core competitive advantage in mobility, further cementing the leadership in the telematics market as we transition from SDV to the AIDV era.

In a related development, LG’s VS Division, which oversees automotive electronics and electrical equipment, made its debut at MWC 2026, the world’s largest mobile communications exhibition, held in Barcelona, Spain, last March. There, the company unveiled its next-generation smart telematics solution.

LG plans to strengthen strategic partnerships with automakers and telecom companies seeking advanced communication solutions aligned with the evolving trends in autonomous driving and infotainment.
