Samsung Electronics announced on Monday that it will begin domestic production of its Eco Heating System (EHS) Heat Pump Boiler, aligning with the government’s electric heating promotion initiative.
The company has established a 2,132-square-meter production line for the EHS Heat Pump Boiler at its Gwangju Campus, specifically in the second campus of the Gwangju business site. Trial production began on August 19.
Samsung plans to verify the stability of processes and equipment, as well as comprehensively evaluate the performance and quality of finished products, aiming to commence full-scale mass production by the end of September.
Among heat pump manufacturers participating in the electric heating initiative, Samsung is the first to establish a domestic production line, effectively reshoring production from overseas.
Beyond finished product manufacturing, Samsung aims to increase domestic input for core components and overall manufacturing processes, fostering growth with partner companies and boosting the local economy.
The new production line can produce over 100,000 EHS Heat Pump Boilers annually, all of which will be sold domestically.
Leveraging its Gwangju site’s manufacturing prowess, Samsung plans to actively promote electric heating expansion and heat pump adoption in South Korea. The company will strengthen ties between development, manufacturing, and quality to swiftly meet market demands.
The EHS Heat Pump Boiler produced on the new line is a heating solution that uses ambient air heat and electricity for indoor heating and hot water. It boasts a seasonal performance factor (SCOP) of 4.9 under 35°C (about 95°F) floor heating conditions, demonstrating nearly five times the heating energy efficiency compared to power consumed.
This efficiency surpasses that of fossil fuel-based boilers, which have less than 100% energy efficiency, resulting in lower carbon emissions.
Using high-efficiency refrigerant compression technology, the boiler can reliably supply water at up to 70°C (about 158°F), even in winter temperatures as low as -15°C (about 5°F). Homeowners can further reduce energy costs by using renewable energy from installed solar power systems to operate the heat pump.
Participation in Jeju’s Promotion Project and Nationwide Product Demonstrations: Contributing to Electric Heating Adoption
Samsung is actively participating in the electric heating promotion project in Jeju and conducting nationwide product demonstrations to drive heat pump adoption in South Korea.
The company has supplied products for Jeju’s electric heating initiative this year and plans to expand its involvement in a second promotion project for 1,418 households in the latter half of the year.
Ongoing research aims to develop customized solutions optimized for regional climates and housing environments across South Korea. Samsung is currently testing the heating, hot water performance, and energy efficiency of the EHS Heat Pump Boiler in actual homes in various locations, including Yangpyeong, Chungju, and Namhae.
At Samsung C&T’s Residential Research Institute in Jeju and Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, the company is demonstrating its EHS All-in-One solution, which provides cooling, heating, and hot water in a single system.
Im Sung-taek, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances (DA) Division, stated that by establishing domestic production for heat pump products, it will respond more proactively to the electric heating trend and accelerate the heat pump business expansion. It will continue to offer solutions tailored to Korean residential environments by combining the global heat pump technology with domestic manufacturing and service excellence.
This move underscores Samsung’s commitment to sustainable heating solutions and its role in supporting South Korea’s transition to more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly home heating options.
As the market for electric heating solutions grows, Samsung’s domestic production of heat pumps is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of residential heating in South Korea and potentially beyond.
