A petition opposing the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, with over 50,000 signatures, has automatically been referred to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly. This counters the controversy sparked by a petition for Yoon’s impeachment, which has gathered over 1.38 million signatures as of 10:30 AM.

The petition titled “Request to Oppose the Impeachment of President Yoon,” registered on the National Assembly’s public petition website, has garnered 54,070 supporters within a week as of the 11th.

The petitioner stated, “Following the impeachment of prosecutors and judges, there is now a call for the impeachment of the president, undermining the constitution and attempting to destroy democracy and the rule of law. We strongly oppose this impeachment motion.”

The petitioner added, “South Korea has ranked 20th in this year’s World Competitiveness Yearbook published by IMD (International Institute for Management Development) in Switzerland, moving up 8 places from 2023. This achievement represents South Korea’s highest ranking since the evaluation began.”

The Constitutional Court decided in its plenary session on the 9th to hold two hearings on the 19th and 26th regarding the impeachment petition against Yoon. Her mother, Choi Eun Soon, were selected as witnesses, were selected as witnesses. The main opposition party argues that the hearings violate the constitution and laws, asserting that the witnesses are not required to attend.
