On Friday, the Democratic Party announced the establishment of an AI Powerhouse Committee, a new initiative to accelerate the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

Following a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly, Democratic Party spokesperson Han Min Soo informed reporters that the committee’s creation directly responded to party leader Lee Jae Myung’s caucus representative speech. Spokesperson Han clarified that the committee would be an expanded and revamped version of the Task Force for Promoting AI to Achieve Global Top 3 Status, established last November. He added that Lee would serve as the committee chairperson.

In his caucus representative speech on Monday, Lee stressed the importance of investing in future industries, particularly AI and semiconductors. Specifically, he called for constructing an AI data center equipped with over 100,000 AI semiconductor GPUs and training 100,000 AI technology professionals.

In alignment with these goals, the Democratic Party unveiled a 35 trillion KRW (about $26.3 billion) supplementary budget proposal the previous day. The party explained that 5 trillion KRW (about $3.7 billion) would be allocated to future industry investments, specifically in AI and semiconductor development.
