LG Innotek announced on Monday that it has agreed to develop robot components with Boston Dynamics, a global leader in robotics.
The partnership will focus on jointly developing a vision sensing system that serves as the robot’s eyes. LG Innotek will provide the vision sensing module for the next-generation Atlas, Boston Dynamics’ humanoid robot model. Meanwhile, Boston Dynamics will develop software to process visual data captured by the vision sensing module effectively.
The vision sensing system is a comprehensive module integrating various sensing components, including RGB (red, green, blue) cameras and 3D sensing modules. Synthesizing information from multiple components enables robots to perceive their surroundings accurately even in challenging conditions such as nighttime or severe weather.
LG Innotek’s optical technology is world-class. Its sensing components, including camera modules, are widely used in smartphones and autonomous driving applications. At CES 2024, the company unveiled “Sensor Pod,” an autonomous driving sensing solution that combines the advantages of various sensing components, including the vision sensing system.
Looking ahead, LG Innotek plans to broaden its collaboration with Boston Dynamics and explore ways to apply its optical expertise and other core technologies to robotics.
Robert Playter, CEO of Boston Dynamics, believes robots should be able to see, recognize, and understand the world as humans do. He expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, saying they aim to develop an innovative vision sensing system that rivals smartphone camera technology through this collaboration.

He said that LG Innotek has secured a strong position in the robot component market by collaborating with Boston Dynamics, a world leader in robotics technology.
