Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday that it will showcase its Cinema LED screen Onyx at CineEurope 2025, Europe’s largest film industry expo, taking place in Barcelona, Spain, from Monday to Thursday.
Introduced by Samsung Electronics in 2017, Onyx is the world’s first LED screen explicitly designed for theaters. The company recently unveiled an enhanced version of Onyx at CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas this past April.
The Onyx screen boasts impressive specs, including 4K resolution (4096 x 2160), a maximum frame rate of 4K at 120 Hertz (Hz), and 100% accurate color representation in DCI-P3. DCI-P3 is the RGB (red, green, blue) color space standard used for digital movie projection in the American film industry.
With its ability to produce deep blacks and exceptional contrast ratios, Onyx captures subtle details in dark scenes and accurately reproduces the colors and textures intended by filmmakers. This allows audiences to become fully immersed in the cinematic experience.
The screen’s maximum brightness of 300 nits – approximately six times brighter than traditional projectors – enables the vivid display of various content types, including concerts and live sports events, even in bright environments.
Onyx is available in four standard sizes based on width: 5 meters (pixel pitch 1.25 mm), 10 meters (pixel pitch 2.5 mm), 14 meters (pixel pitch 3.3 mm), and 20 meters (pixel pitch 5.0 mm). It also offers scaling options to optimize space utilization for different auditorium sizes.
In an industry first, Samsung is offering a 10-year paid long-term quality warranty program to ensure stable theater operations.
Samsung is also collaborating with Pixar Animation Studios to expand 4K HDR content offerings. The partnership includes mastering Disney and Pixar’s upcoming film Elio in 4K HDR optimized for Onyx, which will be distributed to theaters worldwide.
Future releases, including Hoppers (set for 2026) and Toy Story 5, are also slated for 4K HDR mastering and distribution.
Pixar’s California campus will install an Onyx screen for HDR color and brightness testing, HDR content mastering, and preview screenings for directors and production teams.
Jessie Schroeder, Vice President of Post Production at Pixar Animation Studios, commented that mastering 4K HDR using Onyx opens up new avenues for visual storytelling while offering audiences a truly next-generation cinema experience.
