Authorities have launched an investigation following the discovery of a U.S. military ammunition canister and North Korean cigarette packs in Taean County, Chungcheong Province.

On Wednesday, at approximately 1:08 p.m., a military official visiting a residence in Sowon-myeon came across one empty ammunition can and two cigarette packs, according to the Taean Police Station.

Further examination revealed that the ammunition canister dates back to the 1980s and was previously used by U.S. forces. The cigarette packs were identified as North Korean-made products typically traded in China.

The house where the items were discovered had reportedly been abandoned since 2017, when the owner vacated the premises.

A police spokesperson commented that the ammunition can appear to be an old U.S. military container that was likely repurposed as a toolbox in rural areas. Further noting that they’ve found no evidence suggesting any anti-state activities.
