Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated that the unmanned tactical attack drone launchers unveiled by North Korea during the October 10 parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party have not yet reached the mass production stage.

During a National Assembly defense committee hearing on Monday, Minister Ahn responded to People Power Party Rep. Han Gi-ho’s observation that North Korea had shifted from showcasing quantity to highlighting more operationally focused weapon systems. Ahn remarked that they are conducting a thorough analysis of the recent parade.

He further explained that at this point, it’s unclear whether these drones are being transitioned into operational service and mass-produced or if they are merely for display. In response, they are developing a range of countermeasures.

On October 10, North Korea revealed, for the first time, launchers for unmanned tactical attack drones. The regime showcased the final version of its suicide drones, which have been under development since last year. The displayed launchers are capable of launching six drones simultaneously.

During the parade, North Korea also unveiled its new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), touting it as the most powerful nuclear strategic weapon system of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Additionally, the Hwasong-11—a hypersonic short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) designed for use against South Korea—was featured at the event.

Minister Ahn cautioned that it is premature to fully assess the capabilities and technology of the Hwasong-20 and Hwasong-11 systems. He added that while the display of these weapon systems may serve propaganda purposes, it will continue to monitor the situation closely.
