The Blue House addressed reports on Wednesday that U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) is preparing to redeploy some Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor missiles from Seongju, North Gyeongsang Province, to the Middle East. Officials emphasized that South Korea’s deterrence against North Korea remains uncompromised, regardless of any potential U.S. force movements overseas. This assertion is based on South Korea’s robust military capabilities, substantial defense spending, advanced defense industry, and high troop morale.

A Blue House spokesperson, in a media briefing, stated that it would be inappropriate for the South Korean government to comment on operational matters between South Korea and the U.S.

The spokesperson reiterated that both nations are committed to maintaining a strong combined defense posture to ensure peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the broader region. They emphasized ongoing close communication and cooperation between the two allies.

On Monday, The Washington Post, citing two U.S. government officials, reported that some THAAD systems deployed in South Korea are being relocated to the Middle East. Additional reports suggest that USFK has initiated preparations for this redeployment.

In response to the evolving situation in the Middle East, the South Korean government has activated its emergency response protocols. The Blue House confirmed that real-time monitoring of potential economic and security impacts is underway.
